Language Arts
Reading, Writing, Spelling, and Grammar
In fifth grade, language arts encompasses concepts in spelling and grammar skill work, reading, and writing. Fifth graders will participate in both readers' and writers' workshops. Both are based on the idea that students need to read and write every single day and should make choices about what they read and write. The workshop model allows me to meet students' individual needs and know them deeply as readers and writers!

Workshop ModelHere is a visual representation of what the workshop model is. This is how both our readers' and writers' (and math!) workshop is structured.
Mini-lesson: During this time, I will teach a strategy lesson relating to reading or writing. Students will take notes and participate in think-pair-share or class discussions. Independent work: Students will read or write independently, practicing the strategy taught during the mini-lesson. During this time, I will confer with readers and writers one-on-one. We'll discuss strengths, goals, and develop plans for growth. Share/reflection: During this time, students will reflect on the importance of the strategy taught and/or how to apply it in their work. |
Why do I need to read 20 minutes every night?
